There are so many ways to introduce oneself. All our life experiences and the learnings along the way shape who we are today. I am thinking about where I am born, my siblings, parents, where I’ve lived, which schools I’ve attended, which people have had a big impact on my life, cultures, lovers, landscapes. We are complex beings, with many parts and many different stories. Here is a part of my story that informs much of my values and the way I work.
In 2008 I had the opportunity to go to Sweden and participate in a program called the International Youth Initiative Program (YIP). It connected me to a community of people that were engaged with the world in a way that I had not seen before. It brought me the awareness of the interconnectedness of our existence. The choices that I make have an impact on the whole. We are interconnected! With other humans but also with everything else.
This embedded a feeling of responsibility towards how I want to live my life. My respect for all life grew, my sense of wonder and amazement of how complex and beautiful everything is grew, and the question of what my role in this interconnected world was, emerged.
The feeling of being insignificant in the big web of life, the feeling of disconnect, of overwhelm and insecurity came hand in hand with this awareness of interconnectedness. But the one thing that has always called me back in, is relationship. The more intimate I connect with my environment, both people as plants and trees and earth, the more I feel I have a place in it all and a role to play. Relationships bring me home. These relationships foster a deeper sense of belonging, which then strengthens me to take action that is in service of and inclusive of all life.
I find joy and vitality in the dance with paradoxes. Being flexible while standing fast, being accommodating while setting clear boundaries, finding hope in the dispair. Curiosity and the willingness to be moved, surprised and changed it’s what keeps me engaged and open.
I am looking forward to connecting with you and listening to your story.
Originally from The Netherlands, I now live with my husband Silas (who I met in Sweden:)) and young child Saga on Orcas Island, WA.
